The KON workshop in Kuramae

Founded in slow travels

Listening to the
soil's whisper.

Saptarshi Chatterjee was born in Calcutta and raised in Bombay. When he returned from Mumbai to Kolkata and slowly travelled through busy towns and idyllic villages, the eyes saw newly what the heart always knew.

Stories from folk-tales and sleepy lores from grandparents came alive and the purpose is to make thrive that which has travelled through time and is now imploring to be preserved.

Struggle against obsolence

Vanishing trees
and raging spouses.

Across the state, date palm trees are being culled and fewer new ones are planted. It is too tedious a task to nurture them for years before the careful harvest of their sap. It is easier and more profitable to adultrate.

Most young adults in the state have never tasted pure gur. And the ones who are climbers frequently face domestic pushback from their spouses for a job most deem to be dangerous.

That what is delicate, deserves to be preserved. That what is to be preserved, deserves to come back in conversations.

A short chronology

YESTERDAY

The First Pot

In 2024, we opened with our first pot of freshly made jhola nolen gur for our close friends and family.

TODAY

Wrapper

The pot started becoming two and we started looking at the challenge of presenting ourselves in a way that represents who the gur is.

TOMORROW

Adding Shelves

Slow travels and serendipitious explorations will have us expand our collection based on what the soil offers up.
